The vicious bite of poor judgment today won't be felt for many years, and who wants to do business with a big mouth who uses poor judgment and goes off on something he knows nothing about? Who would hire someone who has a history of attacking others through lies on the web?
• Be realistic. If you believe that principle really matters, think again. It will cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars in lawyer fees to defend a defamation lawsuit. If you are "lucky" enough to find a lawyer from some public interest group to take up your case, consider that they are extremely inexperienced trial attorneys, and also consider that an adverse judgment will likely be devastating to you. Check it out...the first thing such a group does (particularly Public Citizen) is publicize the case to the world, which generates comment (and coincidentally financial contributions for them), and then your quiet little problem has become a very huge, and very public, problem. Now go out and try to get a decent new job!
• Understand the costs. Litigation is expensive. Cases can cost six figures in lawyer fees, and more, to take to trial. Law firms won't generally extend credit to you unless you pledge collateral to cover fees or are a very healthy and prominent company. In considering your options, understand that one of the worst things you could do is begin to defend the case and then run out of funds to carry on. You are not in a position of strength at that point.
• Here is the best advice: Don't go out and publish controversial and potentially damaging statements unless you are ready, willing and able to carry the extreme personal and financial burden of proving the allegations you made are true. And for those graduate students out there who take great pleasure in attacking legitimate companies in order to increase their blog authority rating...well, good luck finding a job.
